Dr Benn is largely responsible for the development of X-Bomber (along with Professor Hagen), so he is a major character right from the start of the series. He commands very wisely, although he leaves most of the actual fighting to the younger crew members. He even smokes a pipe in the series, adding to his generally contemplative attitude!
When it comes down to it, however, he's prepared to put action before words and his death is the direct result of going hand-to-hand with a bionic assassin sent to kill Lamia. Shiro takes his place in X-Bomber's command structure, but knows he can never really fill his shoes...
